World Diabetes Day

Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

382 million. That's the number of people living with diabetes worldwide today. And by the year 2035, 592 million people will have this disease. Diabetes is a chronic condition where the body does not metabolize sugar properly. As a result, sugar which is our main energy source, remains in the blood causing other complications like kidney disease, nerve damages, and heart diseases. However, most cases of diabetes and the complications that arise from this disease can be avoided through healthy lifestyles.

In order to promote such lifestyles and reduce the rate of diabetes, the International Diabetes Federation celebrates November 14th as World Diabetes Day. This day was first celebrated in 1991 in an attempt to make people aware of this disease and to keep it in the spotlight.

On November 14th the world over diabetes organizations, health departments, and companies among others organize activities to be part of this day. Some of the activities include sports events, free screening for diabetes, press conferences, walks and runs.

A diagnosis of diabetes in most people is attributed to five factors excessive weight, lack of exercise, unhealthy diet, smoking and alcohol consumption.

However, you can make a few changes and change the course of your life:

    • eat a healthy diet. Avoid highly processed food and eat leafy greens, vegetables and fruit.
    • exercise. Get your recommended dose of exercise which is 15-20 minutes of moderate physical activity a day for five days a week.
    • don't smoke
    • limit alcohol intake

Diabetes and all its complications can be prevented. So stay fit and stay healthy.
